Xanthine oxidase (XO) catalyzes the oxidation of hypoxanthine and xanthine to uric acid, generating superoxide anions (O₂•⁻) and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) as byproducts, making it a major source of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in biological systems. The kit measures uric acid production or ROS generation as an indicator of XO activity. Results are expressed as Units/mg protein.
